Roanoke Island Festival Park Events

Roanoke Island Festival Park is an interactive family attraction that celebrates the first English settlement in America. The centerpiece of the 25-acre island park adjacent to Manteo, North Carolina, is Elizabeth II, a representation of one of the seven English ships from the Roanoke Voyage of 1585. Costumed Elizabethan sailors greet visitors and help them experience sixteenth century seafaring life. Also visit the Settlement site, Roanoke Adventure Museum and see the Legend of Two-Path film. Events are scheduled throughout the year in our indoor Film Theatre and our Outdoor Pavilion. Admission is charged. The on-site Art Gallery, fossil pit, Museum Store, Outer Banks History Center and marsh-side boardwalks are free and open to all. Hours vary seasonally. North Carolina Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island

The NC Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island will offer weekly work parties as they begin to ready the sailing fleet for the 2008 season. Visit the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse and learn the history of the screw-pile lights. Times and dates vary seasonally. Visit obxmaritime.org or call (252) 475-1750 for current programming schedules.

Roanoke Island 1862 - A Civil War Living History Weekend

March 1 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and March 2 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) in the Outdoor Pavilion and Mall at Roanoke Island Festival Park. A Civil War Living History Weekend will commemorate the 146th Anniversary of The Battle of Roanoke Island at Roanoke Island Festival Park. The seventh annual festival will feature re-enactors of Union and Confederate soldiers and Civil War-era sailors and civilians. Other events include period activities such as artillery demonstrations, drills, living history encampments, blacksmithing, woodworking, crafts, presentations, lectures, civil war surgeon, book signings, enlistment station, period music performances and children’s activities. The Cultural Heritage Center in Kinston, NC will partner with RIFP in presenting a lecture, by Malcolm Beech, and exhibit on the 37th US Colored Troops who were recruited from the Freedmen’s Colony on Roanoke Island. Priceless Pieces Past and Present Quilt Extravaganza

Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Old quilts, new quilts, quilts with stories, beauty and memories hang for the month at Roanoke Island Festival Park Gallery. The annual exhibition features quilts with a connection to Dare County either by owner or maker. The gallery is transformed with quilts hanging from the rafters and the room is abuzz with quilters working on projects and talking about their passion. Hours are Monday- Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and volunteers keep the gallery open on weekends from noon- 4 p.m. Vendor day will be held on March 15 from noon to 4 p.m. The show and parking is free and open to the public. Taste of the Beach 2008 - Foodie Weekend

In March, The Dare County Restaurant Association and Accommodations Industry come together to present TASTE OF THE BEACH 2008, a four day culinary festival, March 6th through March 9th, "celebrating original Outer Banks restaurants and the best of the islands." A variety of restaurants will host exclusive dinners offering special menus with wine pairing ideas, feature guest chefs, brewery tours, cooking classes. United State Air Force Heritage Aire Presents a Celtic Concert

8 p.m. Film Theatre at Roanoke Island Festival Park. The prestigious Heritage Aire Celtic Ensemble will perform in the Film Theatre on Saturday, March 8, at 8p.m. The ensemble made its debut performance with the Heritage of America Concert Band in December, 2004. Under the direction of Test Sherry Burt, Heritage Aire blends a contemporary musical approach with traditional Celtic music style to create a stunning musical tapestry. The members of Heritage Aire perform on traditional instruments such as the Irish flute, tin whistles, button accordion, and bodhran. They also employ modern instruments like the acoustic guitar and clarinet to achieve their unique sound. The performance is free and open to the public. There is no change for parking. War Zone: World War II off North Carolina's Outer Banks

Saturday, March 8 at 3 p.m. at Kill Devil Hills Library and Sunday March 9 at 3 p.m. at Hatteras Village Civic Center. NC Roads Scholar Kevin Duffus explores World War II attacks off the west of NC's Outer Banks. He has compiled a stunning collection of eyewitness stories of merchant sailors, coast guard recruits and residents who survived the events.
